Former Sheriff, Rancher, and Veteran Advocate Announces Campaign to Protect Communities, Strengthen Education, and Defend Rural Values
PAWNEE, Oklahoma - Mike Waters, a lifelong Pawnee County resident, former Sheriff, and proven conservative leader, has officially announced his candidacy for Oklahoma House District 35. With nearly three decades of experience in law enforcement, Waters has built his life around protecting families, serving his community, and standing up for Oklahoma values.
"For more than 25 years, I’ve worn the badge and stood watch over our communities," Waters said. "Now, I’m stepping up to serve in the State House so we can ensure Oklahoma families remain safe, strong, and free."
As Sheriff of Pawnee County, Waters led major investigations, broke up child predator rings, and worked side by side with other agencies to secure convictions and deliver justice. He has been a steady hand in times of crisis, known for his integrity and his commitment to law and order.
"Public safety will always be my top priority. I will fight for tougher penalties on violent offenders, stand with our law enforcement officers, and make sure criminals know that Oklahoma will not tolerate lawlessness," said Waters.
Waters also understands the importance of Oklahoma’s rural heritage. Raised on a cattle ranch, he continues to run livestock today. He knows firsthand the struggles faced by farmers and ranchers, and he is committed to ensuring agriculture remains a pillar of Oklahoma’s economy.
"I’ll always be a voice for our farmers and ranchers. Agriculture is the backbone of our district and our state, and I will fight to protect the land, values, and way of life that built Oklahoma," Waters pledged.
His service extends beyond law enforcement and agriculture. Waters comes from a proud military family—his father a Vietnam veteran, his uncle also a veteran, and his stepdaughter serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He is committed to honoring veterans and ensuring they receive the care and respect they’ve earned.
"Our veterans are heroes who deserve more than words of thanks. They deserve action. I’ll fight to fully fund veterans’ services, improve healthcare access, and make sure no veteran is left behind," Waters said.
Education is another priority for Waters. Through his role with the United Community Action Program, he has worked to support early education for children and provide resources for Oklahoma’s seniors.
"Strong schools make strong communities. I’ll fight for parents’ rights in education, make sure schools are safe, and ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed without Washington bureaucrats dictating how we raise and teach our kids," he added.
Waters enters the Republican primary with strong backing from law enforcement leaders across the region, including:
• Joe Harper, Payne County Sheriff
• Shawn Price, Pawnee County Sheriff
• Bart Perrier, Osage County Sheriff
• Matt McGuire, Noble County Sheriff
• Chief Stout, Cleveland Police Dept.
• Chief Underwood, Hominy Police Dept.
• Chief Keeling, Pawnee Police Dept.
"The support I’ve received from fellow law enforcement professionals means the world to me," Waters said. "Together, we’ve stood shoulder to shoulder to protect our citizens. Now, I’m ready to take that fight to the State Capitol."
